The National Pork Producers Council (NPPC) is criticizing a jury verdict against another North Carolina hog farm.
Late last week, jurors awarded 25 million dollars to plaintiffs who had lodged nuisance claims against Smithfield Foods, which contracts with the farm in question. It was the second legal defeat in two months for Smithfield, which faces a series of lawsuits targeting its open-pit waste handling methods.
NPPC says the rulings represent “trial-lawyer abuse” of the legal system and “set a dangerous precedent for American livestock agriculture”.
