The Food and Drug Administration held a public hearing Thursday to provide interested parties an opportunity to comment on the technology used to produce meat in a laboratory and discuss regulations related to the technology.
Dr. Dan Kovich, director of science and technology for the National Pork Producers Council, attended the hearing.
“Well, it certainly was very interesting. I think that’s safe to say,” says Kovich. “Although we vigorously dispute the fact that FDA will have final jurisdiction over any products that may result from this process, it really was the first time that everyone was together in one room to kind of talk about these products–how they’re produced, what they might be used for, and obviously, how they might be regulated–although USDA was completely absent from that conversation.”
Kovich discussed the meeting and NPPC’s position on lab-produced meat in this interview with Brownfield.
