Research is being done in Illinois to compare the benefits of two different saturated buffer systems used to reduce nutrient loss and increase soil saturation.
“A standard system compared to one we are calling the pitchfork design, it has three dispersion lines that go out laterally instead of the traditional one dispersion line out of each side.”
Jon Schoonover with Southern Illinois University tells Brownfield the pitch fork design they have installed in Sullivan, Illinois has 1500 feet of tile line compared to just 500 ft in the traditional buffer system.
