Ohio
Department of Agriculture Director Dorothy Pelanda sent a letter to Ag
Secretary Sonny Perdue today, supporting Ohio Governor Mike DeWine’s request
for a Secretarial disaster designation.
The
ODA says record rainfall has devastated Ohio farmers and is crippling the
state’s agriculture economy.
DeWine
and Pelanda have been meeting with farmers across the state. As a result of
those conversations, Pelanda is asking Perdue to consider providing certain
exemptions in policies regarding prevent plant acres and cover crops, changing
policies for beginning farmers, and providing assistance for planting of cover
crops for erosion control and reduced weed pressure.
