Pig farmers a casualty of trade disputes

The president of the National Pork Producers Council (NPPC) says pig farmers are getting beat up as the Trump Administration ushers in a new trade environment.

Ohio hog farmer Jim Heimerl says he considered using a visual aid to convey the impact of trade retaliation from China and Mexico

“At some point in time you can only bleed so (much).  I wanted to come in here wearing band-aids to get the point across to say we are bleeding.”

During a World Pork Expo news conference this morning in Des Moines, Heimerl pointed to Iowa State University economist Dermot Hayes’ calculation that since China first proposed retaliatory tariffs, hog futures have plummeted $18 dollars per-head.
