A Midwestern governor is asking Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack to update payments that are made to cattle producers through the Livestock Indemnity Program.
In a letter to the Secretary on Friday, Nebraska’s Jim Pillen says current LIP payments are 50 percent of the market value compared to 75 percent, which is authorized in the statute. However, USDA sets payments during previous year’s market cycle.
Pillen says he spoke with the Secretary by phone on Thursday to discuss livestock losses in Eastern Nebraska due to recent extreme heat.
