Produce Rule will cost small farms the most

A new study by USDA’s Economic Research Service says the Produce Rule in the Food Safety Modernization Act will cost smaller farms the most to implement.

The study says costs related to administering the rule, employees and food safety will range from less than half of a percent of annual produce sales for large farms making more than $3 million to nearly seven-percent for very small farms.

A separate study by USDA found smaller farms need to make more food safety changes than larger farms to meet the new regulations.
