A leading animal scientist says she’s frustrated by the federal government’s proposed regulation of gene editing in livestock.

University of California-Davis animal geneticist Dr. Alison Van Eenennaam says livestock gene editing research is being held back by the FDA’s proposal to regulate it the same way it does new animal drugs.

“So if you go in and make a single base pair change to an animal using gene editing technology, then that alteration is considered to be a new animal drug and has to go through the new animal drug regulatory process—and that’s quite an extensive process,” Van Eenennaam says.
