A second “nuisance” trial involving the world’s largest pork producer, Smithfield, is underway in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Local residents claim that a hog farm contracted with Smithfield uses an inadequate waste-disposal method that emits unpleasant odors and undermines their quality of life.
The case is very similar to another North Carolina trial in April, in which the plaintiffs were awarded more than 50 million dollars—though the judge reduced the award to 2.5 million in punitive damages per a state law that caps damages.
