Several U.S. Senators have asked the USDA to extend the June 1st Margin Protection Program sign-up deadline by thirty days. Minnesota Democrat Tina Smith says the extension would help the dairy farmers who are also planting crops by giving them more time to evaluate MPP and other changes made in the Bipartisan Budget Act.
Smith says a letter asking for the extension was sent to Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue Thursday.
Enrollment in MPP began April 9th at Farm Service Agency offices and is retroactive to the first of the year.
