Milk production during September increased slightly because of better output and more cows.
USDA says production in the U.S. for the month was 1.5 percent at more than 18 billion pounds with production per cow up 27 pounds from last year.
The herd size increased 6,000 head on the year but was down 2,000 from the previous month.
South Dakota saw the largest increase in production during September, up 16 percent, followed by Georgia, up nearly 15 percent.
