Smithfield Foods has announced it is closing its pork-processing plant in Charlotte, North Carolina. Production will be transferred to the company’s Tar Heel, North Carolina facility to increase efficiency and better utilize capacity.
A spokesperson for Smithfield says the Charlotte plant is a small processing plant, not a harvest facility and the company’s website says it processes heat and eat products.
The plant has 107 employees, and the company says it will provide financial incentive for hourly employees to remain at Charlotte until the final day of production in December.
