South Dakota lawmakers and individuals are working to make industrial hemp legal in the state. They held South Dakota Hemp Day, organized by the South Dakota Farmers Union, in Pierre Monday to build support for the crop that’s illegal in only three states, including South Dakota. Republican State Representative Lee Qualm, who chairs a hemp summer study committee, tells Brownfield Ag News the key to legalization is strict permitting.
“When you grow it, you have to have a permit, you have to have a background check; when you transport it, you have to have a permit,” said Qualm, suggesting regulations that could be proposed for hemp production.
