Southern Illinois farmland values fall

A mid-year farm real estate survey indicates southern Illinois farmland values are down 3.53 percent, “which isn’t a big surprise,” said Aaron Johnson, the chief operating officer at Farm Credit Illinois.

Lesser quality farmland saw most of the decline, according to Johnson.

“The 1A flat black stuff was pretty level for the year,” Johnson told Brownfield Ag News.  “There’s some stability in the farm real estate market in our territory.”

Farmland values have been going gradually lower the past four years, said Johnson, amounting to about a 15 percent reduction from 2014, but he points out that it’s still considerably higher than in 2010.
