The spring wheat crop is likely to be less than first thought. The Wheat Quality Council’s just-completed Hard Red Spring and Durum Wheat Tour yield estimate is 41.1 bushels to the acre.
“Certainly that’s not a crop failure kind of a number,” said Dave Green, executive vice-president of the Wheat Quality Council. A close look at the crop caught people off-guard, according to Green.
“When we got out there and saw that it’s certainly a nice crop, there just weren’t the tiller counts and the head sizes to generate any thinking that this could be a record crop,” Green told Brownfield Ag News Friday.
