A west-central Minnesota sugar beet grower says this is one of the latest starts to planting he can remember.
Noah Hultgren farms in Kandiyohi County.
“2011 was a really late spring. I don’t think we got any beets in the ground before May (that year). The difference (this year) though is how cold it is and ground conditions are just so cold, and it’s going to take awhile for all the frost to come out of the ground.”
Hultgren tells Brownfield one field is fit for planting, but most of their ground needs more time to warm up.
