Tar spot confirmed again in eastern South Dakota

A plant pathologist with South Dakota State University Extension says tar spot was present in the state again this year.

Madalyn Shires says after scouting many counties in eastern South Dakota, it was confirmed in low levels across multiple fields.

“We found it in 3 counties: Clay, Yankton and Union,” she says. “Those were the counties we found it in 2022 as well.”

It’s a relatively new corn disease in the state.
