Extreme heat will return for much of the week on the southern Plains, but a surge of cool air will trail a cold front across the northern and central Plains and the Midwest.
Scattered showers and thunderstorms will precede and accompany the cold front, although the rain is not expected to provide widespread relief in drier areas of the Midwest.
Rain could become heavy, however from the east-central Plains to the Ozark Plateau.
