Cash hog markets have been under a lot of pressure recently, but there has been speculation the outbreaks of African Swine Fever in China and the EU could provide some price support.
University of Missouri livestock economist Scott Brown says it could. “We’re sitting here in the US with fairly large runs of hogs right now and domestic supply is heavy,” he says. “It’s hard when you’re looking at cash markets to get a lot of strength when you’re betting on what happens in the terms of the future when it comes to African Swine Fever.”
He tells Brownfield the impact will be all or nothing.
