The threat of lodging increases as corn matures in the field.
Pioneer agronomist Matt Vandehaar covers central Iowa and says stalk integrity is a concern.
“You may legitimately have some stalks that got cannibalized, compromised, and so it’s important as you see those fields or those portions of the field, to monitor them as we get through harvest.”
He tells Brownfield corn is dying prematurely in drought-stressed areas.
“That is something that would need to be prioritized so we aren’t picking it up off the ground or being concerned about efficiency, or just yield loss from it not getting into the header and into the combine.”
Vandehaar says some corn in his area shut down in August and farmers cannot expect those stalks to hold up into October.
