Tyson says it’s investing $2.2 million in Future Meat Technologies, a Jerusalem-based biotech company that manufactures meat directly from animal cells, without having to raise or process animals.
Tyson is also putting money into other so-called fake meat makers Beyond Meat and Memphis Meats. Future Meat Technologies says it’s the only company so far that can make non-GMO animal fat, which it says provides meat aroma and flavor.
The company also says it’s redesigning its manufacturing process to get production costs from the current $4,500 a pound, down to about $2.25 to $4.50 a pound by 2020.
