A research team at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln has received a $5 million USDA grant to study management practices that can help lower methane emissions from livestock.

Paul Kononoff, professor of animal science, says his team will research interrelationships among animal genetics, the gut microbiome, and nutrition. “We’ll be tracking animals for several years and measuring not only their genome, but measuring all of these phenotypes related to methane production and energy utilization, and trying to find these genetic components that are actually affecting methane production.”

He tells Brownfield he hopes the research will improve efficiency and profitability for producers.
