The heads of USDA and FDA say both agencies are needed to regulate cell-cultured meat.
Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue says the departments will work together to outline their regulatory roles after this week’s joint public meeting. “We want to be ahead of the game, I think the regulatory framework needs to be there to provide guidance for our entrepreneurs and innovators to work towards.”
FDA commissioner Scott Gottlieb says he’s confident federal labeling and safety regulations will be in place for food grown from cells by the time products are ready to market.
