USDA: cotton crop up sharply on year

The USDA has reduced its expectation for this year’s cotton crop, but it should still much larger than a year ago.

Upland cotton production is seen at 21.145 million bales, down 3% from August, but up 19% from the 2018 total of 17.566 million, with an average yield of 826 pounds per acre, compared to 873 a month ago and 847 a year ago. Planted area for cotton was also down on the year at 13.531 million acres, compared to 13.85 million last year, but the USDA expects a much lower rate of abandonment this year and a much higher harvested area total.
