The USDA expects this year’s U.S. winter wheat crop to be 1.192 billion bushels, 6% less than the 2017 total of 1.269 billion. The average yield is projected at 48.1 bushels per acre, down 2.1 on the year, and harvested area could be the lowest on record at 24.769 million acres, compared to 25.291 million a year ago.
Hard red winter production is expected to drop 14% to 647.028 million bushels because of drought or near drought conditions in parts of the Central and Southern U.S.
