New data from the USDA indicates farm irrigation is becoming
more efficient.
Results from the Department’s 2018 Irrigation and Water
Management Survey show despite slightly more irrigated acres compared to 2013,
water usage fell nearly six percent.
The report attributes most of the improvement to better
technology, although weather also plays a big part.
Another finding is ground water from on-farm wells accounts
for 50 percent of irrigation water, with an average depth of 235 feet.
