The USDA has issued new meat and poultry labeling
guidelines. The guidelines printed in
the Federal Register Friday outline the documentation needed to support
animal-raising claims made on product labels.
USDA says generically approved labels do not need Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) approval, but labels with special statements or claims including animal-raising claims must be approved before use.
Meat labels with claims certified by a third-party including organic must disclose the certifying group’s website on the label.
