The USDA says poultry production during July was up 5% on the year at 4.395 billion pounds. Most of that was chicken, up 5% on the year at 3.893 billion, with a 1% increase in turkey production to 490.602 million pounds.
The chicken slaughter was 4% higher than a year ago at 819.130 million head, but the turkey kill dipped 2% to 19.452 million, and average live weights for both chickens and turkeys were heavier than last year, at 6.32 pounds and 31.61 pounds per bird, respectively.
