An Illinois weed scientist warns farmers to watch for the spread of Palmer Amaranth.
“It is moving northwards, right now it is a severe problem in the Mississippi Delta region moving up into southern Illinois.”
Adam Davis, head of the university of Illinois crop sciences department, tells Brownfield while Palmer Amaranth is a cousin of Waterhemp, it has a much bigger impact on yields.
“But unlike Waterhemp, which at full infestation maybe reduces crop yields by 30%, full infestations of Palmer Amaranth completely eliminate crop yield.”
He says it is important to
identify the Palmer Amaranth early and invest in hand labor to get rid of it
before it seeds in a field.
