A shift to wetter weather in Tennessee during January recharged soil moisture but had some drawbacks.
Up to a foot of snow in parts of the state mid-month accompanied bitterly cold conditions, which led to extra hay feeding by livestock producers.
While a move to warmer temperatures with heavy rainfall melted that snow and added to soil moisture levels, it also left fields and pastures muddy.
50% of Tennessee’s winter wheat crop is in good to excellent shape, up 9% on the year, with 59% of cattle in good to excellent condition.
