Wheat Stem Maggot adults found in South Dakota

Wheat Stem maggots have been spotted in South Dakota winter wheat fields, but researchers are still working to track the peak of wheat stem maggot adult flights.

SDSU extension Entomologist, Adam Varenhorst says It’s not the adults that cause injury, but larvae that dig into the stem and feed, halting nutrient flow, causing bleached heads. He says chemical treatment isn’t recommended.
