Nationwide, winter wheat conditions are better than last year. “Sixty-four percent good to excellent and 9% very poor to poor. That compares favorably to last year’s crop which had drought problems on the southern plains.” But, Rippey says there are serious condition problems related to wetness and winter kill in states growing soft red winter wheat, including Ohio which has a winter wheat condition rating of 31% very poor to poor.
