PIERRE, S.D. – The 2023 South Dakota Indian Education Summit will be held November 16-18 at the Huron Event Center.
The theme of the 20th annual Summit is Building a Stronger Future: Oceti Sakowin Woiyukcan. The event aims to bring educators, administrators, college students, elders, and community leaders together to explore opportunities to increase academic achievement and holistic growth for Native American students, along with an extensive exploration of art, history, and culture. Participants can expect to gain strategies and tools to enhance student’s lives in the classroom and beyond.
Keynote Speakers include Donald F. Montileaux, Donovin Arleigh Sprague, Melvin E. Monette-Barajas, and Cecelia Fire Thunder with a memorable Hoop Dance performance from Starr Chief Eagle. Breakout Sessions will cover a wide assortment of topics, including Oceti Sakowin Essential Understandings & Standards (OSEUS), higher education, empowerment, and much more. Brian Brown will be the Emcee of the event.
The Summit’s final day is designed for K-12 students and families to learn more about the nine Tribes that share geography with South Dakota while also having fun! Activities for the youth day include storytelling, drumming and singing techniques, traditional games, exploration of the buffalo, and Lakota star knowledge.
