SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Avera Health has received a $35 million donation to support construction of a new children’s hospital, marking the largest single gift in the system’s history.
The contribution comes from philanthropist and entrepreneur B. Thomas Golisano, founder of Paychex. In recognition of the donation, the children’s hospital within the new patient care tower at Avera McKennan Hospital & University Health Center will be named the Avera Golisano Children’s Hospital.
Construction is already underway on the six-story, $165 million tower, which will focus on care for newborns, children and families. Health system officials say the expansion will increase capacity and enhance pediatric services across South Dakota and the surrounding region.
Golisano said the gift is intended to improve access to care closer to home and support better outcomes for children and families. He has donated more than $1 billion to education and health care initiatives nationwide.
Avera President and CEO Jim Dover said the investment will benefit patients across the region for generations.
The new women’s and children’s addition on the Sioux Falls campus is expected to open in early 2027.
