Angela Wilkerson Resigns as Mayor of Sturgis After Seven Months Amid Conflict and Challenges

Angela Wilkerson has resigned as mayor of Sturgis after just over seven months, citing persistent personal attacks and conflicts with the city council.

In her resignation statement, she expressed that these challenges were detrimental to the community, stating, “I feel as though my staying in this position will cause more harm than good.”

Wilkerson was appointed in February 2024 to complete the term of former Mayor Mark Carstensen, during a time of significant transition, including the absence of a city manager. However, her tenure was marred by disputes with the newly seated council, which began in May 2024.

She highlighted issues such as the council’s refusal to make the mayoral role full-time, loss of key staff, and limited access to legal counsel.

Her resignation comes amid ongoing scrutiny, including a circulating recall petition. Since Wilkerson took office, two council members have resigned, along with other key city officials. Her resignation is effective immediately.
