The Argus Leader has decided to withdraw its lawsuit against the City of Sioux Falls regarding the city’s selection of The Dakota Scout as its official newspaper for public notices.
This decision follows the City Council’s choice earlier this year, which was motivated by cost savings and made possible by new legislation allowing more publications to qualify as “legal newspapers.”
The Argus Leader, which held the position for decades until July 1, had argued that The Dakota Scout failed to file necessary paperwork on time. However, a Minnehaha County judge denied an injunction to reinstate the Argus Leader.
Although Gannett, the parent company of the Argus Leader, disagrees with the ruling, it has opted to drop the lawsuit.
The Argus Leader can reapply for the official status in June 2025.
