Avera Queen of Peace is partnering with South Dakota State University’s Respiratory Care Program to provide hands-on clinical training for students pursuing careers in respiratory therapy.
The partnership began in May, when students started working alongside Avera’s respiratory care and medical teams in Mitchell. The training gives students practical experience in a variety of health care settings, including emergency care, intensive care units and pulmonary function testing.
Hospital officials said the collaboration is intended to help prepare the next generation of respiratory therapists while addressing workforce needs in rural communities across South Dakota.
Through the program, students gain direct exposure to patient care and clinical procedures under the guidance of experienced health care professionals.
Avera Queen of Peace said the partnership supports its commitment to developing future health care workers and ensuring access to high-quality respiratory care services in the region.
Officials said the program also strengthens rural health care by creating opportunities for students to train and potentially build careers in communities across the state.
