Brookings City Council Considers Five-Megawatt Solar Project near Local Landfill

The Brookings City Council received an update on a proposed five-megawatt solar project in South Dakota. Missouri River Energy Services (MRES) plans to build the solar plant on a 75-acre plot, using 40 acres, near the local landfill.

The project aims to connect to the Brookings 34th Avenue substation via an underground cable and is designed to power approximately 1,100 homes.

The site selection criteria included proximity to a distribution substation, being above the 100-year floodplain, and consideration for future development.

The project is in the conceptual design phase, with an estimated completion date in early 2025 and a projected cost of around $20 million.

The Brookings City Council has yet to take any action on the project.
