Brookings City Employee Arrested for Theft from Nonprofit Supporting Youth Hockey

Paul Laleman, a 40-year-old parks technician employed by the City of Brookings, was arrested and charged with grand theft for stealing over $7,000 from the Brookings Ice Skating Association (BISA), a nonprofit supporting youth hockey.

Laleman had access to the funds through his job and was caught on covert cameras stealing money from the locked concession stand at Larson Ice Center.

BISA officials noticed discrepancies in the funds, leading to the installation of cameras. Laleman admitted to the thefts during a police interview, and the investigation is ongoing.

The City Manager stated that they are cooperating with law enforcement but did not comment on Laleman’s current employment status.

BISA expressed gratitude to authorities and emphasized their commitment to overcoming the financial setback.
