Brookings Debates Book Removal from School Libraries

The Brookings community has been engaged in a debate over the removal of certain books from school libraries, initiated by the website savebrookings.com, which called for reconsidering book selections.

Books like ‘To Kill a Mockingbird,’ ‘Speak,’ and ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ were among those targeted.

The website openly expresses partisan goals, referring to the “Republican Party platform.” However, a recent school board meeting saw strong opposition from community members who rallied against book removal.

Critics argued that such actions could suppress academic freedom and harm marginalized individuals.

Superintendent Summer Schultz announced that no further book challenges would be entertained, putting librarians back on their regular duties.
