The South Dakota Law Enforcement Officers Standards and Training Commission made a unanimous decision on Wednesday, signaling the fate of Brookings Police Officer Damien Weets’ career.
A quorum gathered at the Sioux Falls Ramkota for a hearing involving Weets’ actions.
Testimonies and video evidence, including body cam and fixed camera footage, were presented.
It was revealed that Weets denied a victim’s unconscious state when questioned by medical staff.
The commission found Weets guilty of conduct unbecoming of an officer and imposed a one-year suspension of his law enforcement certification.
To be considered for reinstatement, he must undergo a psychological evaluation within 60 days and complete additional training in conflict resolution, use of force, and courtroom testimony.
There is no guarantee of his reinstatement.
