MITCHELL, S.D. — Construction continues on Mitchell’s new Bypass Trail, with crews currently pouring a section of the path adjacent to Cadwell Park, according to Mitchell Parks and Recreation.
The section under construction runs north and northeast from Cadwell Park toward the intersection at Minnesota Street and is replacing an existing trail segment along the park.
As part of the project, a chain-link fence removed along the north-south stretch of the trail will not be replaced. Parks officials said the fence posts had begun heaving from the ground and the fence was no longer needed to contain soccer balls because soccer games are no longer played at that location.
The trail will continue across 15th Avenue and wind between a gravel parking lot and a wetland area before extending west of Mitchell Christian School and continuing along the planned route.
Parks officials noted that, like all trails maintained by the department, the Bypass Trail is intended for pedestrian and bicycle use only.
The Parks Department will be responsible for ongoing maintenance of the trail once construction is completed.
