Collaborative Effort to Reduce Geese Population near Sioux Falls Regional Airport

City and state officials in Sioux Falls are joining forces to address the issue of an increasing number of geese around the Sioux Falls Regional Airport.

Sioux Falls Animal Control and the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Department plan to employ sound cannons and pyrotechnics in areas surrounding the airport, starting on Wednesday.

The initiative aims to enhance aviation safety by minimizing the presence of geese that could pose risks to airplanes.

The use of sound cannons is considered a humane method to deter geese without causing harm, and they will not be operated during nighttime hours.

The influx of Canada geese during winter, attracted by open sections of the Big Sioux River, raises concerns about potential damage to aircraft from collisions with birds.
