Congress has earmarked millions of dollars for housing development in South Dakota, including $3 million for Black Hills Habitat for Humanity.
With Rapid City facing a housing crisis, Senator Mike Rounds, who advocated for the funding, emphasized the importance of addressing the region’s housing challenges.
The median home price in Rapid City is around $365,000, placing homeownership out of reach for many low-income families.
Rounds highlighted that reducing infrastructure costs—such as roads, sewers, and water—could help make homes more affordable.
Black Hills Habitat executive director Scott Engmann shared that the investment could result in about 40 new homes in Rapid City. However, the funding still requires congressional approval.
