Elkton Superintendent Brian Jandahl and a teacher are set to resign following a controversial incident where a sex offender was invited to speak at a school.
The district held a meeting to discuss the incident and revise its visitor policies. The teacher, Taylor Thompson, has also submitted her resignation. Additionally, new policies for stricter visitor oversight have been introduced by the board.
Jandahl sent a letter to staff and parents explaining that Andrew Polly, the sex offender, was invited by a teacher to speak to a class. Weeks later, staff reported the incident to authorities, leading to Polly’s indictment for loitering at the school.
Both resignations will be reviewed at an upcoming board meeting.
The district has acknowledged the need for better communication oversight and is implementing new measures to ensure visitors are properly vetted. These include an immediate policy review and increased administrative authority to ban individuals from the grounds.
Jandahl has expressed his wish to resign effective upon the board’s ability to hire a replacement.
The district is dedicated to student safety and apologizes for any concerns, seeking the community’s support as they reinforce their commitment to school safety.
