Former S.D. Superintendent has Teaching Certificate Revoked

Ryan Bruns, a former superintendent for the Langford and Northwestern Area School Districts, had his teaching certificate permanently revoked on April 21, according to the South Dakota Department of Education.

Bruns served as the superintendent for the Langford School District from 2014 to 2022 and was hired as the superintendent for the Northwestern School District starting March 1, 2022.

The allegations against Bruns included terminating a paraprofessional’s employment in retaliation for questioning an inappropriate conversation with a young girl. He also posted a student video on his personal Facebook page that embarrassed students and made disparaging comments about students’ respect for the American flag.

In addition, Bruns engaged in retaliatory behavior by requesting that a principal write up an educator who spoke to the Department of Education.
