The Great Plains Zoo and Butterfly House and Aquarium presented their master plan at Carnegie Hall, outlining their vision to combine both campuses and create an enhanced attraction for Sioux Falls.
CEO Becky Dewitz emphasized the goal of differentiation, aiming to make a unique impact on the community. The plan reflects a successful collaboration between the two organizations, with improved transparency and teamwork since new leadership took over three and a half years ago.
The master plan includes new animal enclosures, cafes, conservation zones, and educational opportunities. Funding, however, remains a significant concern, with the organization exploring private funding options and planning to tackle the project in stages.
The first phase will focus on the education center, aquarium, and butterfly rain forest, thanks to a transformative lead gift whose donor and amount are yet to be disclosed.
