CUSTER, S.D. — A hiker was rescued from the summit of Black Elk Peak Saturday morning after suffering a broken leg while climbing rocks.
Custer County Search and Rescue responded after receiving a report of the injury around 8:55 a.m. Because of the remote terrain, hot temperatures and the lengthy time required for a ground evacuation, rescuers requested assistance from the South Dakota Army National Guard.
A search and rescue paramedic stabilized the hiker’s injury before a National Guard helicopter arrived and lifted the person to safety for further medical care.
Officials thanked the Guard for its assistance and reminded hikers to bring plenty of water and supplies as temperatures climbed into the 90s.
Search and Rescue also reported helping other hikers during the hot weather and urged visitors to use caution on area trails.
