HURON, S.D. — The City of Huron has imposed an overnight curfew following severe storm damage that left downed power lines and fallen trees blocking streets and alleys throughout the community.
The curfew took effect at 10 p.m. Thursday and will remain in effect until 6 a.m. Friday, according to the Huron Police Department. City officials said the restriction was implemented to protect public safety as hazardous conditions remain across the city.
Residents are being asked to stay off the streets, avoid unnecessary travel and shelter safely overnight while emergency crews continue their response.
City crews are expected to resume cleanup efforts at 8 a.m. Friday. Officials said additional information about a citywide cleanup effort will be released later.
Residents can dispose of storm-related tree branches and woody debris at three designated drop-off locations: the Huron Arena, the Third Street lot east of the bridge and the city’s solid waste drop-off site.
The city’s Street Department also will begin collecting storm-damaged trees and branches placed on city boulevards starting at 8 a.m. Friday. Crews will continue working until all neighborhoods have been serviced.
City officials asked residents to place branches and limbs on the boulevard rather than in the street, keep debris away from mailboxes, fire hydrants, utility poles and parked vehicles, and separate storm-related tree debris from other materials whenever possible.
Officials thanked residents for their patience and cooperation as cleanup efforts continue.
