The Associated School Boards of South Dakota reported a significant decrease in open teaching positions as the 2023-2024 school year approaches.
Initially estimating 515 vacancies in May, the number has dropped to 183 according to the ASBSD Teacher Placement Center.
Although not an exact count, this estimate is based on those who advertise with the organization.
Despite ongoing teacher shortages in the state and nationwide, the decrease in vacancies represents progress compared to previous months and the same period last year.
The positive trend is attributed to the efforts of school districts and administrators who have explored various options to fill positions, particularly in special education and elementary education.
However, the distribution of vacancies remains uneven across districts, with larger ones having an advantage due to better resources.
Special education positions remain challenging to fill.
